Just passed a former student from a couple of years ago in the hallway. He held open the door for me (if nothing else, the preppy, Southern kids at my school are polite) and said, "Go ahead, Miss Terry."
As I walked past with a grateful smile, he asked, "You are still Miss Terry, right?"
Yes, Tripp. Still Miss Terry. But thanks for the vote of confidence.
Funny how my status as one of the very, very few unmarried teachers at this school is so prominent in the minds of even 13-year-old boys that he would've even thought to ask that. Yet another example of how we are still raising our kids to see being single as unusual and, in some ways, sad and unfulfilling, so that they are always-hopeful that, somehow, their teachers/friends/acquaintances who are living that lifestyle have found a way out of it.
Then again, maybe he has a crush on me. Ha!!
