Why doesn't "sherbet" have an 'r' in the second syllable? I mean, does anyone really pronounce the word without one? Maybe I'll start a petition and send it to the Oxford English Dictionary people to get "sherbert" approved as an alternative spelling.

Actually, I think some people DO pronounce it without the second r. It's always been a bit of an odd word to me. Isn't it french or something?
I've always been confused about which was correct, sherbet or sherbert. And then isn't there something similar - sorbet, or something? Way too much confusion.
i agree..put an r in it or call it sorbet.
It's French, rhymes with the store "target," or Tar-shay"
