It's Friday afternoon on a nice, Fall day in the South, where every high school for miles around has its mind on ... its ability to pee when it wants to?
About an hour ago, the faculty received this email, entitled, simply, "restrooms":
We are having plumbing difficulties that can not be resolved until after the school day has ended. The only functional restrooms we have are located at the stadium.
Seven minutes later, we get another email, entitled, simply, "restroom":
Lee Dawson just told us the stadium restrooms do not work at this point.
Wonderful! We have a school full of over 1000 students, faculty, and staff, all of varied ages and bladder-control capacities, all unable to use a restroom. Let me correct that. They can use a restroom, they just can't flush the toilet after they do. And, well, I'll just say that it's just past lunchtime, and, well, folks need to be able to flush. Right.
The faculty and students are, of course, pushing for getting off for the rest of the day. I mean, there are only 1 1/2 hours left before the final bell rings anyway... what could it hurt? The problem is that none of us are certain that any of the administration (those with enough power to make such a call) are here today. None of us have seen them. We're left to fend for ourselves.
And so, when my students ask (as they usually do) at the beginning of seventh period if they may go to the bathroom, I'll tell them that yes, they may. But they can't flush.
3:10, come quickly.
